The Spring collection

This collection is all about the Spring and the joy it gives us unless you are Phillip Larkin- see below.

I have mentioned previously that I have been cataloguing my paintings. I have made a selection of works about Spring and spring blossom, some recent some from the archive. They are all for sale and I hope you like what you see.

I did this painting a couple of years ago …. sadly we don’t have chickens this year!  We have deferred getting any more – avian flu and feelings of being overwhelmed spoke caution!

They were very naughty though – they knew they were not allowed into the garden … but that didn’t deter them – maybe they just wanted to be in the painting!

Here they are again, this time in the orchard with old friend Melbury looking gorgeous. I was very fond of those birds – which I found strange because I did have a real phobia of birds – feathers and flapping etc… but needing to wash their bottoms etc – I found I really rather loved them. They liked the warm water in my studio sink and went into a sort of delighted trance.

The Trees

Philip Larkin

The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too,
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.

Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

I find Larkins mix of celebrating beauty – and the ‘note of melancholy and regret’ really speaks to my condition.

The Mower

Philip Larkin

The mower stalled, twice; kneeling, I found
A hedgehog jammed up against the blades,
Killed. It had been in the long grass.
I had seen it before, and even fed it, once. Now I had mauled its unobtrusive world
Unmendably. Burial was no help:

Next morning I got up and it did not.
The first day after a death, the new absence
Is always the same; we should be careful
Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.

Apple blossom and smeuse … a word rediscovered by Robert Macfarlane.  I am sure I have written about this before ….The Sussex dialect gives us the fantastically specific ‘smeuse’: a hole in a hedge created by small animals frequently scampering through it. More than 20 species of mammal criss-cross our hedgerows, including hedgehogs, mice, stoats and rabbits, so it shouldn’t be hard to spot a smeuse or two.

This is a painting I have been hanging on to – finally I have been persuaded that I need to begin to let some of my old favourites go. So here is White and Pink Magnolia and Kitty   – little black cat … not actually black – she was a brown Burmese – but we liked to tease her…  she was a little sweetheart! Isnt it strange how we love our animals?  more and more as I get older – and soppier!

We now have a new little pup – dear Sol died three years ago. It was only last October that we ‘took delivery’ of a very lovely grey whippet called Stanley… he really tries to be good and is a loving companion already.

This is called Last Tree in the Old Orchard and I have painted it many times. It is a pear tree – the shape of the blossom is so distinctive. It is marvellous how Nature/Gaia has arranged a wonderful procession of blossoms throughout the seasons. Not actually for the benefit of humans – we must remember that!

There are 16 paintings in this selection and they are here displayed here in my old studio. I hope this newsletter inspires you to come and have a look! We are happy to welcome you by appointment for the dates Friday 19th May to Sunday 27th May, 11am – 5pm.

Please do come and see the paintings. There may even be coffee … and if the weather is kind you are welcome to look around the garden and see what has inspired me to paint? And see my glorious new studio. Unfortunately, due to the new puppy, I will have to say that dogs are not allowed this time.

The full collection can be seen by clicking the button below – you can select your preferred day and time on the form which is on the same page, or you can contact us by email.
